TA Coalition Webinar: Integrating Peers in Crisis Response Services

Submitted by admin on Tue, 03/22/2022 - 12:45

A SAMHSA sponsored webinar presented on behalf of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), took place Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 1:30pm Eastern Time called “Integrating Peers in Crisis Response Services”.

Description: Throughout the country, states and communities are implementing crisis response models ahead of the realization of the nationwide, 3-digit 988 hotline for suicidal and mental health crises by July 2022. 988 implementation calls for not only 24/7 crisis call centers, but also mobile crisis teams and crisis stabilization programs.

With more than 120 million people in the U.S. living in designated Health Professional Shortage area for mental health, peers play a critical role in filling the gaps in the crisis continuum of care. Peer support specialists have the experience to help people in crisis and may be uniquely situated to better aid people in need. In each part of the crisis continuum, peers can be effective in providing crisis services.

This webinar will showcase how peers are currently working as part of the crisis response system including on the NAMI HelpLine and in a peer-run respite center. Then, we will explore how to center racial equity and lived experience in building a crisis response system.

Speakers:

•Kaitlin Gazi, a Peer and Family Member Volunteer on the NAMI HelpLine and is also a Cognitive Skills Trainer and Personal Care Aide

•Paula Verrett, MSW, CPS , Director of Iris Place Peer Run Respite Program of NAMI Fox Valley

•Keris Myrick, M.B.A., M.S., Ph.D., co-director of S2i and Board member of the Executive Committee for the National Association of Peer Supporters
